Homeless Services

Safe Place

Safe Place is a 25 bed residential safe haven program. The program serves homeless people with a mental illness, including those with co-occurring substance abuse.  Operating under the philosophy of a damp shelter, it provides a second chance for many not able to survive in a traditional shelter environment. In a damp shelter staff emphasize following house rules about behavior but do not require residents to stop self-medicating their mental illness. It’s called a housing first model because as people feel safe they  usually stop self-medicating .  Nursing, case management and therapy services are offered on-site.  Safe Place residents are focused on increasing their psychiatric stability, decreasing substance use, and securing permanent housing in the community.  Staff members understand recovery is a difficult process and passionately help residents transition from addiction into living a life of recovery.
